About The Artist

Uniquely Yours,                               Fine Polymer Clay Designs by Ulrike Schäfer

Featuring Intricate, Unique One-of-a-Kind Polymer Clay Jewelry, Polymer Clay Eggs, Barrettes and Pins

I was first introduced to Polymer Clay during a class with Liz Mitchell at the Princeton YWCA in October 1993. Early in 1994 I began making polymer clay picture frames and eggs, employing and fine- tuning my Complex Cane- or Mosaic-Technique.   An article on the eggs, Voices of Spring, was published in Bead & Button Magazine # 18 in April 1997.

In the beginning I planned to make only non-jewelry items, but how can you work with Polymer Clay without making beads and creating all kinds of jewelry?  So eventually I ventured into jewelry-making, using either slices of my canes in combination with seed beads, or using slices to create beautiful round beads which I assembled in combination with macrame knots, a look I like very much.

By now, my “full range of products” includes also barrettes, eyeglass holders, pins, tie clips and pens.

Lately, I have been making what I call “pillows”, and I use those either as pendants on sterling silver necklaces with beautiful, highly unusual twisted beads or on bola-style seed bead necklaces or in combination with differently shaped beads in full, elaborate necklaces.

An article on these pillows was published in the May/June 2004 issue of Step by Step Beads from Lapidary Journal beginning on page 16.

I have been taking classes with wellknown Polymer Clay Artists such as Kathleen Dustin, Lindly Haunani, Cynthia Toops, Gwen Gibson, Karen Lewis (aka Klew) and, most recently, with Sarah Shriver and attended lectures by Tory Hughes, Pier Voulkos, Margaret Maggio and Laura Liska-Oakes.

And while I learned and explored new techniques, I find myself always going back to Millefiori, as I truly enjoy creating my signature intricate designs.
