Polymer Clay is an extremely versatile material, and there are five brands of clay currently available: Sculpey, Premo, Kato-Clay, Cernit and FIMO. Each of those clays has different properties making it more (or less) suitable for specific projects.
I work exclusively with FIMO. Although it is more difficult to work with because it is so much stiffer and harder to condition (soften), it is the strongest brand available and lets me maintain the fine detail of my very intricate Millefiori work.
And here’s how FIMO got its name:
The daughter of the famous German dollmaker Käthe Kruse invented FIMO. She was looking for a material to repair damaged heads of her mother’s dolls. Later, she also used it to make mosaics.
Her name was Josefine, nicknamed Fifi - hence the name: FI from Fifi, and MO from mosaic.
Today, FIMO is manufactured by the German company Eberhard Faber.
